It's rare to see a heavy metal drummer double as a fry-screaming frontman. That job takes guts. Literally. Based in Surrey and Glastonbury, Gutweed formed in mid-2025 and play metal/punk/synth. Influences include The Prodigy, Cardiacs, Hed (PE) and most nu metal.
They are:
Joey Godzikowski (vocals, drums, songwriter)
KJ (guitar)
Jack Sewell (bass)
They met in the early naughties when Jack’s former band, Aspex, supported Joey and KJ’s previous band, Durban Poison, in the Woking area. Even in those days, a BBC contributor described Joey as “possessed by the spirit of some sort of drumming demon”, a testament to his kinetic stage presence. Later, KJ went to Stafford to study music tech where he and Joey also played in DnB band UK:ID. Together, they headlined 5,000-plus capacity festivals including The Godney Gathering, Stafford Castle Festival and Farm Fest. Fast forward to 2024. Joey buys a cheap Squire Telecaster on ebay, then splices mischievous, synthy melodies and guttural vocals with dark punky guitar riffs. Gutweed is born.
Gutweed recorded live drums at Skyline Studios, releasing their first album “The Gutcracker” on major streaming platforms in Jan 2026. They filmed and edited two music videos themselves, released on Youtube (also in Jan 2026). This year, they’ll be recording their second album and booking gigs to promote it all.
